PAKISTAN DELEGATION PRESENTED ITS CASE IN COPENHAGEN

Copenhagen, 15th December: Pakistan Delegation on 14th Dec arranged a special side event to highlight Pakistan’s case with respect to Climate Change. Dr. Pachuri, Chairman IPCC, beside many international dignitaries, also attended this side event. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, Director General Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), presented Pakistan’s vulnerability to Climate Change. A senior level delegation from Pakistan, including Federal Minister of Environment, Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad, Advisor S & T, Planning Commission and Minister of State, Secretary Environment, also attended the event.

Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry also highlighted the impact of rising temperatures and global warming on the glaciers of Pakistan and its subsequent affect on the Indus water system as well as threat to food security in Pakistan. He mentioned that the rise of temperatures in the Northern Areas of Pakistan, which is house to a number of glaciers in Himalaya-Karakoram-Hindukash (HKH) region, is mainly due to the global warming and more importantly due to the direct carbon deposits on the glaciers. The black carbon is resulting from the transboundary pollutants coming from neighboring country which is having coal-based industries. Dr. Qamar also highlighted that owing to financial constraints Pakistan alone cannot afford the needed finance for adaptation to Climate Change, as such, international community should help Pakistan from proposed Climate Change Fund.
