We are just over halfway through our incredible Dubai getaway and day three offered up the one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, with the Heritage Dinner Safari thanks to Musandam Travel.
Even though I haven’t caught up on sleep or let my body clock properly adjust, I was super excited to have the chance to take part in the dinner safari as I had read a bunch of amazing reviews about it and couldn’t wait to share the experience with the entire Bloggerati crew.
While waiting at our hotel for the bus that would soon transfer us into the best desert safari in Dubai (Lubab Desert), the mood was definitely one of excitement as those of us staying at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai ooh’d and aah’d at everyone’s desert attire (some more extravagant than others) and compared notes on what we were most looking forward to. When the bus did arrive, attention quickly shifted to the humour of our driver and guide… and we were all in stitches from laughing so hard and soon learned that this wouldn’t end once we arrived at our destination.
The location of the safari lies within the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which is about a 65km drive from our hotel in downtown Dubai. The hour-long ride there was the perfect opportunity to take in the surrounding landscape and see what lies just outside this incredible city.

When we arrived we were greeted with a row of vintage Land Rovers that were extensively used in the 1950’s and since then have become part of the UAE history. It looked like something straight out of a movie and as if that wasn’t enough, we were all soon sporting a traditional Emirati ghutra, which actually quickly fell off mind you with my constant fidgeting.
With ghutras again in place, we piled in to the fabulous Land Rovers and took off on an off-road tour over the sand dunes. Stopping halfway, we scaled to the top of a dune to take in the view and practice our star jumps in an attempt to snap the perfectly silhouetted photo.
We continued on our journey, stopping to observe a wild gazelle and learn about the medicinal properties in the “Flame Tree”.
After a little more off-road action, we soon arrived at our sunset spot where we were not only able to watch the stunning sunset throw all kinds of pinks, oranges and reds across the Dubai skyline, but also view a falcon demonstration. Used across the UAE for many years, we heard all about the training that goes into the powerful birds and their use as hunting birds throughout the generations.
Our next and final stop for the evening after sunset was to a traditional Bedouin camp lit with a fire and lamps. Greeted with customary Emirati coffee we then received a tour of the camp and a demonstration of how to make the traditional Emirati bread we would eat with our meal.
The rest of the night was all about experiencing Emirati cultural activities with dancing, an authentic dinner, henna tattoos and relaxing around the shisha pipes with the fruity aroma of green apples. Ahh… you just simply can’t put this experience into words!
The afternoon and evening really was a step back in time and we were all disappointed when it was time to leave. We all felt very honoured to receive an insight into how the Emirati people have lived for generations thanks to Musandam Travel. I haven’t laughed so hard in all my life as I did on this tour and that was thanks to our absolutely hilarious guide and driver. A truly emotional and exciting experience, it is definitely a must do for anyone heading to Dubai.
What an experience. What a trip.
