Pakistan is basically an agricultural country. In order to boost up agricultural productivity, there are still a number of areas in the agromet field where research activities are needed to be undertaken. For example;

Þ To find out the crops sowing dates in different areas of the country based on climate considerations.

Þ Climate Change impacts on agriculture/crop production in Pakistan.

Þ Climate Change impacts on water resources of the country, and

Þ Drought monitoring and the development of early warming and prediction models.

Obviously, there are challenges that we face and will encounter more as were move forward. In order to meet the present and future challenges, PMD placed a team of dedicated scientists under the umbrella of R&D Division to work on these projects. Main objectives of this proposed R&D Division are to:

¨ Undertake research & Development activities to identify, understand and solve the present and future climate change and environmental problems and to assess their possible impacts on our climate, agriculture, water resources etc. (For this purpose, brief write ups about New Assessment of Climate Change Impacts and the Climate of 21st Century and its Consequences.

¨  Integrated and supervise R&D activities undertaken by various Directorates and other sub-ordinate offices.

¨ Provide expertise and advisory services to the planners and policy-makers in addressing emerging problems relating to Climate Change agriculture, assessment of available water resources and their effective/optimum utilization flood control and environmental hazards.

¨ Serve as faculty for promoting R&D activities.

PAKISTAN METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT

During the recent past, quite a good number of R&D problems were assigned to PMD for undertaking research and subsequent submission of reports to the Government. These include:

a. Cloud Seeding Experiments to augment rainfall.

b. Wind Mapping of Coastal Areas of Pakistan for assessing power generation potential.

c. Assessment of glaciers and enhancement of their melting rates to overcome water crisis.

d. Mangla Dam Raising Project etc.

The discovery of El-Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) & La-Nina phenomena, global warming, rise in assessment of their impacts on natural ecosystem, water resources, agriculture, deserts vegetarian and human health are the result of dedicated and well-coordinated research activities made possible only with the application of newly emerging technologies.
